FranchiseBlast's Scorecard Insights help you identify actionable insights in a clear and concise overview of a store's (or store group's) health status. The health status of a store or a store group is determined by a series of key performance metrics tailored to your business. For example, you might decide that the payroll to sales ratio is one of the key metrics that you need to track in order to the keep the health of a location in check

FranchiseBlast's Performance Overview

If it is your first time using Insights reporting, we recommend starting out by reading our guide for getting started with insights first before getting into the following article in order to familiarize yourself with general concepts used in this area of FranchiseBlast.

Getting Started Generating a Scorecard

To access the Scorecard Insights report, go to Insights > Scorecard from main navigation menu. Scorecards offer a powerful comparative analysis that benchmarks the performance of a location or store group against similar ones. The comparisons available are the following:

  • Location vs Location (1 vs 1)
  • Location vs Store Group (1 vs average of the group)
  • Store Group vs Store Group (average of a group vs the average of the other group)

Benchmarking a Location Against a Store Group (or another location)

Locations are being compared to similar locations in their own store group. You might want to benchmark the performance of a drive-thru restaurant location against other locations that has a drive-thru, which would be grouped together in a store group that contains all the drive-thru locations, for example.

To generate this comparative scorecard report, the location you want benchmarked needs to be selected from the benchmark dropdown first. From the against dropdown, you can then select the store group grouping the similar locations you would like to compare the location's performance against.

Finally you need to select a timespan for which the scorecard will display values. You might want to generate a scorecard for the previous month for instance. This can be defined using the period calendar dropdown control by selecting one of the pre-defined periods (this month, last month, this year, etc), a custom date range or an accounting period (if these were setup for your organization).

Similarly, you can compare a location against another location that's assigned to you directly by selecting that location from the against dropdown and generate a location vs location scorecard analysis.

Benchmarking a Store Group Against Another Store Group

Benchmarking a store group against other store group is another comparative analysis that's available in scorecard insights. In this case, you could be benchmarking the performance of all locations managed by a specific franchisee coach against the average in the organization. Select a Store or Store Group from the Benchmark dropdown menu; this is the location or group you will be generating the scorecard for. Select a store group from the Against dropdown menu; this is your comparison group.

Understanding Scorecard Insights

Once a scorecard insights report is generated, you’ll see the severity, benchmark, ranking, trend, and result for each metric.

Metric Benchmark

In the case where the scorecard benchmarks a location against a store group, the benchmark column represents the percentage of discrepancy between the reported value of a metric for a location, benchmarked against the average reported value across the comparison store group. For example, the benchmark column will report 5% (green) if the location is 5% above the average of all the locations in the store group it's being benchmarked against.

The same applies when benchmarking a store group against another store group. However, it will show the percentage of discrepancy between the average of locations in one store group against the average of locations in another one. For example, a benchmark of -20% (red) means that the average of the store group being benchmarked is 20% lower than the average of all the locations in the comparison store group.

Additionally, you can use the icon in the benchmark column header to display or hide the actual difference between the values being benchmarked. For instance, a store with $10,000 in net sales for the month of June being compared against a store group with an average of $15,000 net sales for the month of June will display -$5,000 on the second line of the benchmark column when this option is enabled.

Metric Rank

The rank column in a scorecard represents the rank of the store or store group in the store group it's being compared to. For example, if a location scorecard displays 5th in the rank column it means this is the 5th best location out of the 50 locations in the store comparison group.

The difference in ranking between the period being analyzed and the previous period for a location (or store group within the comparison store group) is displayed on the left for each metric as well. A green arrow with a +21 besides it would translate to a positive change of 21 positions in rankings for the location or store group within the store group it is being benchmarked against.

Leaderboards

The rank columns of the scorecard also offer a leaderboard drilldown that allows you to see how a location or store group ranks against other locations or store groups. In order to access the leaderboard drilldown you can simply click on a rank cell of a scorecard and the leaderboard will be displayed.

Metric Trend

A trend comparing a metric's reported value against a prior period is also available in scorecards. It can compare a location or a store group's result for a metric against its result for the previous period or for the same period in the previous year (year over year).

The settingsin the trend column header can be used to display or not the actual difference between the values being benchmarked. For instance, a store with $10,000 in net sales for the month of June having $15,000 net sales for the month of June in the prior year will display a 50% increase when the year-over-year option is chosen in settings.

Similar to the benchmark column, the scorecard trend column options in the trend column header can be used to display or not the actual difference between the values being benchmarked. For instance, a store with $10,000 in net sales for the month of June having $15,000 net sales for the month of June in the prior year will display a 50% increase when the year-over-year option is chosen in settings.

Metric Severity

The severity of each metric can also be displayed in a scorecard for a location or a store group. The severity is a value that is setup at the organization level settings to communicate which metrics are important across the organization and aligns everybody on these priorities, with the scorecard as a tool.

Metric Result

The result column in a scorecard simply represents the value of the metric for the location or the store group within the period that was selected to generate the report.

Visualization Type

A scorecard can be visualized as a table listing all your key metrics grouped by category, or as a series of time series charts that lets you analyze the evolution of each metric in the scorecard over time. In order to toggle from one view to the other, you can simply use the visualization togglefunctionality.

Customizing a Scorecard Report

The scorecard insights report template offers different types of report customization functionalities that aren't covered in the general customization guide for insights report as they are specific to the scorecard.

Filtering by Metric Category

Each metric is part of a category of metrics, a labor expense is likely part of the operation expenses category for instance. When you build a customized report however you might only want to display a few categories out of all the available options. You might want to only display the metric in the marketing category in a marketing specific scorecard for example. Which category of metrics if shown in a scorecard report can be set by clicking on report customization at the top right of the report and checking only the categories you wish to display in the report in the filter metric groups section as shown in the screenshot above.

Sharing and Downloading an Insights Scorecard

In this report, there are three options to share your report with others in the organization which  can be found on the top-right of the report:

Export allows you to export to PDF, helping you share results while offline to users with no access to FranchiseBlast or in a formal meeting.

Export all Data is a way for you to export data for all locations within a group. After the download, you can see a listing of the stores, along with the individual metric. As a result, you can see which store contributed to the data, giving you a clear view of the "root cause" of any issue that you detect while reading the report.

Share allows you to e-mail the report on a one-time or regular basis by sending an email with the PDF. Follow the steps below to use this feature.

Sharing with others can be achieved by pressing the sharing button located top right of the report headers.

In case you would only like to share it with a specific list of people, select their names from the People dropdown and press Share. An email will be sent to all of the people you've selected immediately with a PDF export of the report attached.

Another option is to automatically have it shared to everybody in your organization on a recurring basis. A common use for this functionality is to send a customized location scorecard report to all the franchisees in the organization's network periodically by email containing key performance metric insights for their location. This can be done by selecting the Automated Sharing tab in the Sharing screen of the scorecard insights report.

From there, you can decide which interval you want the report to be sent to your colleagues (e.g. monthly or yearly) as well as activate and deactivate the automated report sharing as you see fit.

Most of the time the data coming from third-party system integrations such as POS systems takes a few days to get into FranchiseBlast, and for this reason there's a default delay relative to the interval you select before the emails are sent to everyone.

For example, in a monthly interval automated report sharing, the system will only send the reports on the 15th this month for last month's report. This is to ensure FranchiseBlast has all of the data from all integrations before the information is shared across your organization. However, if you are certain that all of the integrations have pushed their data into FranchiseBlast already, you can manually share it now by pressing the Share Now button within the sharing screen.

Once you're happy with your automated sharing preferences, you can simply hit Done to get back to your report.
