While performing a field audit, most likely while taking a picture, your Apple device may choose to shut down or restart the browser (Safari or Chrome). This guide aims at giving you some practical tips and tricks should this occur.

Understanding the Issue

Your Apple device shuts down applications when they consume too much.  You may have experienced this same issue in other applications previously, as this is not specific to the field audits app. Every app you run or every tab you open in your browser consumes memory (RAM; not to be confused with storage space). The more things you open simultaneously, the more memory you need. Typically, the operating system (Apple iOS) does a good job managing memory but sometimes, when too much is in use it chooses to close an application. All devices have different limits (older devices or iPad minis) are more prone to problems than newer ones.

If you’re experiencing crashes, you’re pushing the device to its limits and it’s time to free up some memory.

Troubleshooting Step 1  : Ensure you have the latest iOS installed.

The web browser (Safari) in earlier versions of the Apple operating system iOS is notoriously less stable than the current release at time of writing (8.4.1). Updating greatly improve the reliability of your device via Settings -> General -> Software Update.

Troubleshooting Step 2  Restart your browser

If your browser (Safari or Chrome) crashes or even if it is just very slow, it is using too much memory. Start by closing all other open tabs you may have open. Next, as it may take many minutes after you close the other tabs before memory becomes available to the remaining one, we will force the browser to close immediately. Press the home button twice quickly. Swipe the browser up (Safari/Chrome) to close it.

Troubleshooting Step 3 Restart your device

If the above is not sufficient, you may try to restart your device. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to power off. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again to turn it back on.
